These days there is a good deal of press and industry attention to Malware. With all the attention
these "Wares" are getting, it's easy to forget there are other types of malicious software or
“malware” that we have to worry about. Viruses, Worms, Phishing and Trojans are other forms of
malware being developed to steal personal data or possibly cause damage to your computer. These
malicious programs are hidden in email attachments, website coding, or files which are
downloaded over the internet.
Spyware-Viruses-Worms-Trojans-Spam - Whats it all about?
Spyware
Spyware is a wide range of unwanted programs that exploit infected computers for commercial gain.
They can deliver unsolicited pop-up advertisements, steal personal information (including financial
information such as credit card numbers), monitor web-browsing activity for marketing purposes,
or route HTTP requests to advertising sites.
Trojan Horse
Trojan horse program is a malicious program that pretends to be a benign application; a Trojan
horse program purposefully does something the user does not expect. Trojans are not viruses since
they do not replicate, but Trojan horse programs can be just as destructive. Many people use the
term to refer only to non-replicating malicious programs, thus making a distinction between Trojans
and viruses.
Virus
A virus is a man-made program or piece of code that causes an unexpected, usually negative, event.
Viruses are often disguised games or images with clever marketing titles such as "Me, nude."
Phishing
Phishing is a form of criminal activity using social engineering techniques through email or instant
messaging. Phishers attempt to fraudulently acquire other people’s personal information, such as
passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy person or business in an
apparently official electronic communication.
Spam
Spam is unsolicited or undesired bulk electronic messages. There is email spam, instant messaging
spam, Usenet newsgroup spam, web search-engine spam, spam in blogs, and mobile
phone-messaging spam. Spam includes legitimate advertisements, misleading advertisements, and
phishing messages designed to trick recipients into giving up personal and financial information.
Actions to help prevent Malware:
- Make sure you are receiving the latest Windows updates.
- Have a good firewall installed for controlling inbound and outbound traffic.
- Delete and do not open any email with an attachment from anyone you do not know.
- Install a Malware/Spyware program and a Anti-Virus protection program on your PC.
- Keep malware/spyware protection software definitions up to date.
- Execute a virus and malware scan several times a week - more often would be better however.
- Use a Spam Filter to prevent dangerous emails and spam from getting into your computer.
If you follow these precautions the chances of your PC becoming infected will be greatly reduced or
eliminated. Our best advice is to make sure your Virus and Malware protection programs are up to
date and running. Don't become the victim of an Internet hacker, TAKE ACTION TODAY!
4 Tips for Malware Software Protection
What Are Bots, Viruses, Malware, and Spyware?
Jimmy Ray Purser explains.
"Any form of malware can cause
an undesirable effect on your
computer or personal data
security."
List of common symptoms
caused by malware:
- Unexplained crashes
- Strange program error messages
- Computer freezes
- Poor computer performance
- Angry emails from people you have
“spammed” or unknowingly sent a virus
- Popup warnings about infections
- Popup advertising
Most computer users have heard the term “computer virus”. In the old days (90's) the only form of
PC infection we worried about was a virus. Over the past decade however there have been many
more forms of malicious computer software that we now classify as malware. To help you
understand the difference between the many variants of malicious software that can invade your
computer we have gathered the definition of each and present it below.
Malicious Software (Malware) Definition
Adware
Adware is any software application in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is
running. The authors of these applications include additional code that delivers the ads, which can be
viewed through pop-up windows or through a bar that appears on a computer screen. Generally
adware is installed on your computer with your permission. It should be noted that people with
adware have unwittingly opted in. The statement that ads will be displayed on your computer is
buried in the fine print of an end user license agreement of the application that you installed.

Spyware attacks. Don't wait until it's too late!
